Barberton is a historical town in the Mpumalanga province that owes its beginnings to the gold rush of 1880s.
The town was named after Henry Barber when he and his cousin discovered gold in the area. The gold fields flourished as fortune seekers flocked to the area in search of riches. But Barberton thrived for only a brief period and soon the inhabitants began to move away to the newly discovered gold fields on the Reef.
Barberton is also known as the Daisy town, thanks to Robert Jameson who discovered the Barberton Daisy (Gerbera jamesoni) here. Interestingly, Barberton was home to Sir Percy, author of Jock of the Bushveld and there is a statue of this canine hero in front of the stately Town Hall.
Barberton's Makhonjwa mountains are celebrated for being some of the world’s oldest geological formations. International scientists have been studying these ancient green rocks for decades.
Barberton's gold mines still exist today and you can watch creative artisans make jewellery from the oldest gold in the world next to the Barberton museum. Outdoor lovers can enjoy paragliding off Lone Tree hill, horse riding, archery or quad biking.
