As one of the fastest-growing cities in Africa, the broader Johannesburg area has a number of very young suburbs and towns. Having a history stretching back to 1903 makes Edenvale one of the oldest and most established. Edenvale is regarded as being on the East Rand, sitting as it does about half-way between the O.R. Tambo International Airport and the Johannesburg city centre. Edenvale is part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, one of the five local government districts of the Gauteng province of South Africa.

As one of the areas adjoining semi-rural land, Edenvale has seen rapid growth and the rezoning of land for residential and commercial use.  This has seen the town expanding north onto previously open land that surrounded the old AECI Modderfontein dynamite factory.

Edenvale features a number of places of interest. The ultra-modern Ricardo Mulder Community Library was opened in 1993 and features three floors – one each for the adult’s, children’s and reference sections.

Many first-time visitors to the town are surprised to find a windmill on the main street!  The mill is a scaled-down replica of the Zeldenrust Molen in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands and was built to draw attention to the Dutch bakery below the mill. 

The area around the previously-mentioned dynamite factory contains a number of fascinating old buildings, with many having been built in the 1890’s as the headquarters of the dynamite company.

Finally, Horwoods Farm and its beautifully-restored farmhouse – built in 1902 – provide a little Eden in Edenvale.  Here families will picnic or braai on weekends, while its open spaces allow children to play cricket or roller-blade.
