Hermanus sits on the south coast of the province of the Western Cape of South Africa, known for its whale sightings.
The town was originally called Hermanuspietersfontein, but the name was shortened and simplified over time to “Hermanus”. A popular retirement town, it is famous for three things: a quiet and peaceful atmosphere that relaxes residents and visitors, frequent Southern Right Whale sightings and the long beaches and coastlines that beg for relaxing walks or fishing trips. For intrigued visitors, the Old Harbour Museum offers many exhibitions that walk one through the whaling industry and the history of the town in relation to this. The Whale Museum even holds the full skeleton of a whale and provides visitors with an audio-visual presentation of both whales and dolphins.
With a flourishing resort and lodge community, Hermanus is a great place to call home during the holiday season with an abundance of wonderful accommodation and exciting activities. The Fernkloof Nature Reserve has more than 40 kilometres of walks and hikes, even boasting a 14 kilometre cliff walk that is unique to the town for its variety of fynbos and birdlife.
