The semi-arid region of the Kalahari gets its name from the Tswana word "kgala," which means "great thirst." That name comes as no surprise to residents of this desert habitat, where there can be up to 4,000 hours of sunshine each year, most of which comes during the eight-month dry season. The vast, open areas here attract people to enjoy the fresh air and gorgeous views of the Kalahari. The region is also home to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, which spans the border of South Africa and neighbouring Botswana. The park is home to many animals, most notably lions, hyenas, leopards and cheetahs.
For indoor fun, the Kalahari Oranje Museum in Upington is a lovely restored manor home filled with Victorian era furniture and artifacts. Also in Upington, the Bezalel Wine and Brandy Estate offers tours and tastings of their locally grown liquors in an attractive setting. The Moffat Mission in Kuruman provides history buffs an intimate look at life 150 years ago in South Africa.
Sportsman flock to the Hotazel Recreation Club to take advantage of tennis and squash courts and a swimming pool. Similar facilities can be enjoyed at the Sishen Golf & Country Club in Kathu.
