Kingsburgh is a small town in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, known for its resorts and lying only 32 kilometres away from Durban.
In 1842, it was most likely named after Richard Philip King who rode through the area on horseback while traveling to Grahamstown in order to gain help for hampered British soldiers.
Originally known as Southern Umlazi, Kingsburgh is made up of the holiday resorts Doonside, Illovo Beach, Karridene, St Winifred's Beach, Warner Beach and Winkelspruit. Winklespruit is a small seaside resort whose name dates back to May 1875 when the schooner, Tonga ,which was carrying wares for Durban was wrecked here. The sailors did not want the cargo to go to waste and set up a store on the river bank where they could sell the water damaged goods. The store was known as ‘winkel’ – the Afrikaans word for ‘shop’.
Kingsburgh became a township in October 1942 and reached borough status in August 1952.
