Kuruman is a small town located in Northern Cape province.
Kuruman is most famous as the home of the Eye of Kuruman, the largest natural spring in the southern hemisphere. This natural fountain of water in an otherwise dry area is quite a unique feature, and it led to the town being called the "Oasis of the Kalahari" and the "Fountain of Christianity." Indeed, the area attracted missionary Robert Moffat, who famously translated the entire bible into the local tongue.
In addition to the Eye and the Moffat Mission, Kuruman is also famous for the Wonderwerk Cave, which features ancient cave paintings. Near the border of Botswana is the Kalahari Meerkat Project in the Kuruman River Reserve, a refuge for meerkats that has been featured on television and attracts many visitors each year to learn more about these fascinating creatures.
Visitors to Kuruman will enjoy a stay at the Guest House on Main, which is conveniently located near the town's restaurants. Two great places to eat are the Del Rio Spur, the classic family chain with some of South Africa's most recognizable meals. Just down the street is Capello Kuruman, which offers diners another option for dining right in town.
