Lephalale is a coal mining town in the Limpopo Province located on the banks of the Mogol River.
It was originally called Ellisras after its farm owners, Patrick Ellis and Piet Erasmus who settled on the Waterkloof farm in 1930. In 2002 it was renamed Lephalale (meaning ‘to flow’ in Setawana) after the main river that crosses the municipality.
Lephalale is the last stopover for safaris on the way to Botswana and the Okavango Delta. The area has abundant wildlife and is home to numerous private game reserves where visitors can see most of the big five. The region is famous among hunters and is also known for excellent fishing in the nearby Mokolo Dam.
Other outdoor activities include viewing the San Rock Artwork housed in several caves in the district; game and bird viewing at game farms and in the D'Nyla Nature Reserve; and hiking trails offering beautiful views.
The Lephalale area is rich with coal and lays claim to the world’s largest open coal mine, Grootgeluk. The Waterberg coalfield has a resource of roughly 75-billion tons of coal – about 40% of South Africa’s remaining coal resource.
Lephalale hosts two of South Africa's power stations: Matimba Power station (Matimba is the Tsonga word for power), and a new power station called Medupi.
