The town of Lydenburg lies on the foothills of the famous Long Tom Pass, surrounded by the Steenkampsberg and Mauchsberg mountain ranges.
Lydenburg was founded in 1849 by a band of Voortrekkers led by Andries Potgieter when they abandoned their previous settlement Ohrigstad because of a malaria epidemic. The name comes from the Dutch ‘Lijdenburg’ meaning ‘Town of Suffering’.
Today Lydenburg has become the heart of the South African fly-fishing industry and is an agricultural and mining hub. The town enjoys a climate typical of the Mpumalanga middleveld with cold nights and warm days. Its central location – only 290kms from Pretoria – makes it the perfect stopover before a tour of the Kruger National Park.
Lydenburg is something of a mecca for creatives and is home to painters, wood carvers, stained glass artists and botanical sketch artists. An annual exhibition is held in the Civic Center to market their goods. Visitors also flock to the area to view the spectacular The Lydenburg Waterfall – one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Mpumalanga. Two of the falls lie next to each other and fall into a deep pool, which feeds the third. Other attractions in include historic memorials, nature reserves and even some hidden fishing spots.
