Mthatha is a town in the Eastern Cape formerly known as Umtata, named after the Sneezewood trees, renowned for their wood and medicinal properties.
Umtata was founded in 1879 and was originally the capital of the Transkei, homeland of the Xhosa during the Apartheid era. Today, the Transkei forms part of the Eastern Cape and Mthatha is still the centre of the region.
Many of South Africa's black leaders, including Walter Sisulu, Bantu Holomisa, and Nelson Mandela, hail from this area. The late Mandela was born in the nearby town of Mvezo and spent his childhood in Qunu.
Mthatha is at the heart of the Nelson Mandela Route, an informative and fascinating tour that takes you step by step through this great leader’s life. The route starts in King Williams Town and then moves through Bisho to Mthatha where the Nelson Mandela Museum is located, opened 10 years after he was released from prison.
Mthatha has a rich cultural heritage and the region remains steadfast in the old traditions that see women wearing ochre-coloured dresses with turbans, wire bracelets and white clay on their faces and bodies. Young boys still observe the initiation ceremony called ‘Khwetha’ and women carry jars of water on their heads.
