Northern Cape is the largest province in South Africa; however, it is also the least densely populated.
Northern Cape borders Namibia and Botswana and has a stretch of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. The capital of the province is Kimberley, a city of about 225,000 residents and a former centre of the diamond mining industry. When the British began to settle the area, the city got its name from Lord Kimberley, who famously complained that he couldn't pronounce the Dutch names in the region.
Because Northern Cape is such a vast, wild region, its attractions feature several expansive parks and nature reserves. Among the best are the Kalagadi Tranfrontier Park, the Mokala National Park and the Namaqua National Park. All offer astounding vistas and views of native South African birds and wildlife. For an interesting man-made sight, check out the Big Hole in Kimberley. This immense quarry is was hand-dug in the frenzy of diamond mining that put Kimberley on the map. While the hole itself is impressive, there is also much to learn about the history of the town in the nearby visitors' centre and coffee shop.
