Formerly known to be the land of the Tswana, this region became part of the Cape Colony in 1895. It can be found beneath the Langeberg on the Namakwari route.

The first buildings – a police cell and a magistrate’s office- were built in 1906, with a tent being utilised as a court. The first house was eventually built in 1909 by Sgt Hubert Warren.

Olifantshoek gets its name from a Tswana word, “Ditlou”, which means “elephant”. Many elephants once roamed the area and their bones eventually found.

Residents and tourists can enjoy the Witwatersrand Nature Reserve, which boasts massive white sand dunes – known to be one of the natural wonders of the area.

There are many great hiking trails, and hunting experiences as well as opportunities to see view San Rock art paintings and a war grave that dates back to 1879.
