Potchefstroom is a medium sized city on the Gauteng border of North West province.
Potchefstroom was settled in 1838 by the Voortrekkers and is one of the oldest European settlements in the region. The name of the town may have come from an early settler, or it may mean "broken pot," a reference to the cracked land in the dry season. Today the city is best known as an educational centre. Most notably, it is home to Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University. There are also several other academic institutions in town, including The Technical College Potchefstroom, The Agricultural Centre and The Potchefstroom College of Education.
One house of particular interest in Potchefstroom is now the Goetz Fleischack Museum. Built in the 1870s, this square townhouse looks unassuming from the outside, but inside it is decked out as an opulent, high Victorian mansion. On the first Saturday of every month, locals stroll through the Fun Fayre, and outdoor market with refreshments, produce, arts and crafts on display. There are also musicians and several special events to keep residents coming back for more. For a quieter time, explore the North-West University Botanical Garden to do some birdwatching.
