The owner and designer of Cape Floral Designs, Mandy Ann Causton, started her training in 1984 while still attending School. She was trained as a florist on a part time basis at Fourways to Flowers by the late Dot Venter, a highly respected International Floristry Judge. Dot taught various methods concerning the care and design of flowers to the standard of The London School of Floristry, where she had studied.
Mandy worked for Dot for 3½ years until Dot returned to Zimbabwe and sold the business to Mandy’s parents. Mandy continued to work (after completing her Matric) for her mother who was a Committee member and served on the Council of a large Floristry relay organisation.
In 1991, Mandy travelled to the U.K. and started working at a Mini flower market in Stokenchurch. Just under a year later, an offer of employment as Manageress was made to her by Lawson’s Flowers. While working there, she completed her UK Floristry Diploma (1994), which was a great platform to gain experience and knowledge in the flower world.
In June 1995, Mandy returned to South Africa and was subsequently employed by Colin Glover of Benmore Florist and in July 1997, she joined the Flowerite Group as Manageress of their Sandton Branch. She later transferred to their Head Office as Production Manager, overseeing all production requirements for their Seven Branches. In 1998, Mandy was invited to join the Gauteng committee of a large relay organisation.
In January 2000, Mandy relocated to Cape Town and on her arrival, she obtained a position with Constantia Florist and later with Moondrops.
After all this experience gained in UK, Johannesburg and finally in Cape Town, Mandy decided to take the bold step and open her own shop and in February 2001, Cape Floral Designs (Pty) Ltd was born. From meagre beginnings and lots of hard work she has built up the business from a one person operation to a vibrant business employing four staff members and providing a service to the residents of Table View, Flamingo Vlei, Blouberg, West Beach, Parklands, Sunningdale and the greater Northern Suburbs of Cape Town.
Mandy has been privileged to have been able to serve on the committee of a large floristry relay organisation for numerous terms, both as Committee Member and then Chairperson for two years. Through her 27-year floristry career, Mandy has been involved in the industry, from television appearances to workshops and demonstrations as well as competing and winning several competitions. Mandy is also still involved with a Floral Tutoring Initiative as a Tutor.
