The Xhariep Region is named after the Gariep Dam and lies in the south western Free State. It is a region of endless space, vast tracts of sheep and cattle farmland and tranquillity.
A mere 129 000 people live in Xhariep, an area previously regarded as SA’s backwater. However, it has since become more popular for being an authentic, unspoilt location away from the over-visited tourist towns.
The Gariep Dam, situated in the southernmost part of the region and known as the Karoo heartland, is the largest expanse of fresh water in the country. It lies on the Orange River, one of the SA’s largest rivers, its shoreline extending roughly 435 kilometres near the towns of Bethulie, Venterstad, Colesberg, Oviston and Aliwal North.
Rouxville, one of the lesser known towns in Xhariep, forms part of the Maloti Route which is the longest signed tourism route in Southern Africa, covering parts of Lesotho, the Eastern Cape and Xhariep. Other highlights of the Xhariep region include a visit to open mine museums, the Laurens van der Post Memorial at Philippolis, the ‘Eye’ of Zastron (a hole in a sandstone ridge on the hill at Zastron), and the Landzicht wine cellar at Jacobsdal.
